Georgia is a republic and a former republic of the Soviet Union. The country is located partly in Asia and partly in Europe and has been influenced by a variety of cultures. Georgia has a population of approximately 3.9 million.

It is divided into 10 regions and two autonomous republics. The Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia and the region of South Ossetia have declared independence and are recognized only by each other, Russia, and a handful of other countries.
