THE WEATHER
When packing your suitcase or bag, it is useful to know what kind of weather to expect during your stay.
A helpful website for checking the weather forecast is: WeatherOnline – Bosnia and Herzegovina.
TRAVEL ADVICE > GREEN
Bosnia and Herzegovina has a green travel advisory, meaning that it is generally safe to travel. During our stay, we will always travel together as a group and follow local safety guidelines.
Be mindful of your personal belongings, especially in busy areas such as Sarajevo. Never leave marked roads or hiking trails in rural or mountainous areas, as landmines and unexploded ordnance from the war may still be present.
VACCINATIONS
Vaccinations are not mandatory for travel to Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, we recommend visiting the GGD website for up-to-date information and advice on recommended vaccinations. This will help you make an informed decision about which vaccinations may be appropriate for your trip.
DRINKING WATER
Bosnia and Herzegovina has many natural springs and generally excellent drinking water quality. Tap water is safe to drink in most areas, so there is usually no need to buy bottled water.
ALCOHOL
For all participants, the following rule applies: consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited!
BRINGING ALCOHOL AND CIGARETTES
Alcohol and cigarettes are relatively inexpensive in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Participants aged 18 and over may bring up to 1 litre of spirits and 200 cigarettes (one carton) into the Netherlands, subject to applicable customs regulations.
Please note! Exceeding customs allowances can result in substantial fines and delays at customs.
DAILY PROJECT REPORTS
FOLLOW US via www.outofarea.nl/projectverslagen.
We will publish daily updates and photos of the project on this page, allowing family members, sponsors, friends, colleagues and others to follow our experiences and activities throughout the trip.
MOBILE PHONES
Mobile phone coverage is generally good throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, calling and using mobile data can be very expensive, as Bosnia and Herzegovina is not covered by the EU's standard roaming regulations.
A phone call can easily cost €2.00 per minute, and mobile internet charges can also be high.
Local Bosnian SIM cards are available at many kiosks and petrol stations. An eSIM or international roaming package may also be a convenient alternative.
MONEY & ATMs
There is no need to exchange money into the local currency before leaving the Netherlands. We will regularly be near ATMs where you can withdraw cash.
The local currency is the Bosnian Convertible Mark (BAM/KM).
The exchange rate is fixed at approximately €1.00 = 1.96 BAM.
Please be aware that ATM withdrawals may involve additional fees. We recommend withdrawing a larger amount together and sharing the transaction costs where practical.
SHOPPING
If you would like to buy crisps, snacks, drinks or other treats, that is no problem! We will visit a supermarket to buy the things you need.
